Owen is a high-school history teacher in Minneapolis who is learning your language in the evenings.
You meet once a week: half the hour in his language, half in yours. This is the English half. He knows what it is like to be the one searching for a word, so he waits, and he is curious about where you are from in a way that gives you a lot to say. He does not correct you. He speaks ordinary, unhurried Midwestern English and asks real questions, which is what a tandem is for.
