Practise speaking Spanish out loud

Which variety you will actually hear

An interview in Austin and an interview in Manchester are not the same rehearsal. Pick the variety you will face: 18 people across 2 of them, then turn up the pressure until it stops being comfortable.

A city or a country, and the map moves to the variety you would meet there.

What should they be like?

What for

What you need Spanish for

Each of these is a page of its own: the people who run those conversations, the situations inside them, and what gets marked. Start from the one with a date attached.

Which one, and why

Pick the accent you will actually hear

An interview at an American company and an interview at a British one are two different conversations: different pace, different vocabulary, different amount of slack. Practising against the wrong one is how people arrive fluent and still lost in the first two minutes.

How a score is decided
Two people working through the same ruled notebook at one table
Checked against peopleEach set of criteria gets about sixty conversations marked by people. The scoring is not switched on until it agrees with them. The spread is measured separately — the same conversation is scored five times — and anything smaller than that spread is never drawn as progress. That is what the badge in the catalogue means. Honestly: no set of criteria has it yet. The conversations are collected and the check is in place, but nothing has been through it. People mark it first, then the run is recorded
  • One variety each, and no switching

Every person here speaks one variety and will not move off it. That is the point rather than a limitation: the accent you will hear on the day is not a setting you get to change.

  • They do not slow down

Normal speed, normal vocabulary, and no enunciating for your benefit. The moment a rehearsal slows down for you it has stopped rehearsing the thing you were afraid of.

  • Ask and you get it. Nod and you do not

Name the word you missed and it comes back, clearly. Nod at something you did not catch and the conversation carries on without you, exactly as it would anywhere else.

  • The pressure is picked, not suffered

Warm, neutral, cold or hostile, chosen before you start. It sets how often they cut in, how long they let a silence run, and whether a vague answer gets through.
